Twilight is probably bad for the ladies

I know we all like to hate on Twilight. ...And here's some more of that. But in a serious vein!

A LiveJournal user posted about how Edward from Twilight shows sign of being stalkery and abusive (something I've mentioned previously, and that Jezebel discusses. Please marry me, Jezebel). And, in this article discussing racism in the series, Jacob shows similar signs.

People. Please. Respect the ladies. Or you will also be invited to Slap Town USA (oh yea, I will abusive you right back).

  1. Disturbing. I just posted today about the ways love is portrayed in YA and the direct connection I see with passive/assertive female leads.

  2. PS In general, you guys are not being crazy enough with hating me for speaking about Twilight. Check out the comments here for some role models you can aspire to.

  3. I'm still waiting for all those scholarly Cultural Studies/Women Studies/Critical Race Theory articles on Twilight to show up on Google Scholar. And for it to be analyzed in university cultural studies classes. There's just too much there to not pay attention to it.

  6. Wow, those comments are harsh (111! did you really think I would read ALL of them?...I skimmed through and focused on the ones with ALL CAPS). But Twilight has always brought out the worst in people when it comes to debate, either for or against.

I, respectfully, have no comment on the topic.

  7. Agreed! If only that Stephen fellow hadn't written this reactionary book which all of those hidebound men and boys bought, propelling it into a cultural phenomenon.

  8. Also: I will pay you cash money if you start hating on similar offensive idiocy in the Harry Potter books.

(And also, also: did the link mention how utterly creepily creepy it is that a 100 year old man hangs around a high school and falls in love with a 16 year old girl? Even if he looks sixteen himself, that's just ... ick.)

  9. Le R--THANK YOU. You're the only one who understands T-light.

And Lydia, this is no place for respect. Shame on you. (And stay away from the bright light at the end of the tunnel until you're feeling better!)

  10. Le R: Did you have to take a class to learn fangirl speak? Is it continuing ed or do I have to be a full time student?

  11. I'm doing better now, Laura. Thanks. Don't chisel my tombstone just yet. And I'll try to be less respectful in the future. My bad.

  12. Yay for the Jezebel link! I think it should be required reading for most ladies. I myself am an approved Jezzie commenter.
    LeR: awesome sauce.
